Fulgencio Obelmejias is one of the most popular and richest Boxer who was born on January 1, 1953 in San José de Barlovento, Miranda, Venezuela. His first chance to be a world champion was presented on the 17th of January of 1981, a lot of Venezuelans believed that he would be a the world champion. His performance in the era of his time (30-0 including 28 knockouts) attracted the attention of many boxing enthusiasts. But, Obelmejias lost for the first time, enduring an 8th-round knockout defeat by the then the world’s champion Marvin Hagler in an HBO Boxing television fight that was held at the renowned Boston Garden, home of the NBA basketball team, the Boston Celtics.

After his rematch with Hagler, Obelmejias won nine straight bouts before being upset, on July 27 of 1985, by Clarence Osby. Amongst the quality fighters that he defeated during that nine fight winning streak were Jeff Lampkin, beaten by an eight-round decision, Jerry Celestine, also beaten over eight rounds, and Eric Winbush, who was beaten in Monte Carlo by another eight-round decision.

He lost the title in his first defense, when he was knocked out by future world champion Leslie Stewart in four rounds, at Trinidad and Tobago on November 15 of 1986.

Obelmejias kept winning fights with knockouts. On March 3, 1980 Obelmejias scored his biggest victories of his professional career. the his former WBC World Jr. middleweight champ Elisha Obed in just three rounds in Caracas.

He made his debut in the professional ring with a fight in the Middleweight division on the 30th of January 1977, when he knocked off Franklin Suzarra in the first round in Caracas. Following another victory over Suzarra and he began an extensive tour through Mexico as well as southern California and southern California, putting on six consecutive bouts in these regions from October 1977 until April 1978. His first fight as a professional, which took place in Mexico City, he worked for nine rounds in his third professional fight before taking out Jesus Garcia Ortiz. His final fight on that campaign was against Abel Cordoba, whom he defeated in a ten-round split during a ten-round decision in Tuxtla Gutierrez’s ring on Feb. 27. His final fight on the tour with Rudy Robles in Tijuana on April 3marked the start of a knockout streak. He defeated Robles in just four rounds.

On October 30 of 1982, he and Hagler had a rematch which was, once again, shown in the United States by HBO. The second time around, Hagler defeated Obelmejias by a knockout in five rounds at Sanremo, Italy. Both Hagler and Obelmejias fell in love with Italy and the country’s culture. Obelmejias established himself there immediately after the rematch with Hagler. Hagler moved to Italy as soon as he lost the world Middleweight title to Sugar Ray Leonard in 1987.
